Dear Manitou Springs Voters,
Like you, we love being part of the Manitou Springs community.
As neighbors, we are grateful to be rooted in a small mountain city with safe streets, scenic views and so many friendly faces.
As attractions owners, we are proud of the many contributions the entire business community makes every day to ensure we maintain a welcoming environment for our visitors.
However, we are disappointed with how we’ve been treated by our local government partners. Without consulting us beforehand, City Council voted unanimously on a ballot question that seeks to triple the amusement tax from 5% to 14%.
Manitou residents and our visitors already pay the highest combined sales tax in El Paso County. If this Triple Tax passes, Manitou Springs will have the highest tax on attractions anywhere in Colorado!
Whether you are a city, a company or an individual, when revenues (or income) go down, the first priority should be to adjust spending, not to raise taxes and drive away new customers and businesses.
Now is not the time to raise taxes on our local businesses – especially those who depend on visitors. Raising taxes dramatically on these seven businesses will hurt every restaurant, retailer, hotel, and special event host in Manitou Springs.
Each of the undersigned business owners stands ready to help Manitou Springs and cooperate with our elected representatives for the betterment of our City. However, rushing to the ballot with a triple tax is not the solution. Discouraging visitors to Manitou Springs will have a long-lasting impact on our local economy.
Vote NO on 2A and let’s restart a process of mutual trust and cooperation between the City and local businesses that ensures all voices are heard.
Working together, we can choose a path that supports our town’s future while keeping Manitou a welcoming place for both residents and visitors.
Thank you for your consideration!
